LIPS CD 021 ECLIPSE available!

This CD is particularly interesting as it exclusively contains - except for the Sonata №1 by G. Bantshikov from 1977 – oeuvres for bayan written in 21st century. A.Cholminov is another great Russian composer of the 20th century. Apart from numerous operas, symphonies, oeuvres for choir and chamber music, he wrote the very simple but profound and heartbreakingly beautiful melody for the film “Predsedatyel” (“The Chairman”) – and that using only two notes. Cholminov uses this melody in his “Autumn melody”. The outstanding Russian composer R.Ledenyov, professor at the Moscovite Conservatory, worked on a cycle of oeuvres for bayan entitled “…on the background of the Russian landscape”. “Evening love ditties” is the 2nd oeuvre of this cycle. The sonata by E.Podgaits, one of the most important Russian composers of the middle generation, was written on Lips’suggestion. M.Bronner, the phenomenal composer of great symphonies, choir- and chamber music oeuvres, as well as various ones for bayan, has, following Lips’request, written a piece entitled “Eclipse”. In this oeuvre the soul and its confusion make up the central part.

21st Festival "Bayan and bayanists" in Moscow

With participation of the federal agency of culture and cinematography of Russia, Russian Gnessin Academy of Music and the Friedrich Lips Fund the traditional XX International Festival "Bayan and bayanists” took place in the concert hall of the Russian Gnessin Academy of Music in Moscow from December 10 to 14, 2008. During its long history the festival took a long way from an inner Russian to a truly world class event. The idea of creating such a festival belongs to its permanent artistic leader, Friedrich Lips, people’s artist of Russia, chairman of the bayan and accordion department at Russian Gnessin Academy of Music. The absolute highlight of the whole festival – not only because of the completely filled concert hall of the Gnessin Music Academy – was the concert of A. Skljarov in the occasion of his 60th birthday. He performed his program with works by E. Derbenko, V. Novikov, R. Galliano, A. Nayunkin with a unique technical and musical mastership, outstanding not only in Russia but all over the world.

LIPS CD 018 THE LAST SUPPER available!

In the course of the centuries the topic of crucifixion has attracted the interest of many outstanding artists, painters, poets and composers. Jesus Christ's famous words (1. Father, Forgive Them, For They Know Not What They Do. 2. Woman, Behind Thy Son. Son, Behold Thy Mother. 3. Verily, I Say Unto Thee: Today Thou Shalt Be With Me In Paradise. 4. My God, My God, Why Hast Thou Forsaken me? 5. I Thirst. 6. It Is Accomplished. 7. Father, Into Thy Hands I Commend My Spirit ) are the basis of S.Gubaidulina’s Partita "Seven Words", for violoncello, bayan and chamber orchestra. After visiting the monastery in the north of Russia, in the area of Vologda, V.Solotarjov wrote the oeuvre "Monastery of Ferapont, meditation about the Dionisy frescos", as the composer was highly impressed by these witty and novel frescos which were created by the great Russian painter Dionisy. For mankind, the secret of Judas' treachery has been a mystery for more than 2000 years. According to the only recently discovered gospel by Judas, the master himself asked Judas to sacrifice him and thus free Christ's soul from the human body. The "Passion of Judas" by M.Bronner, one of the most famous Russian composers, is based on this complicated riddle. The program of this CD is concluded with Bach's Hymn -Prelude "I call, Jesus Christ", BWV 639. There people turn towards God by meditation about all eternity.

Friedrich Lips in London

Friedrich Lips will perform Gubaidulina's concert ‘Under the sign of Scorpio’, with the BBC Symphony Orchestra - V.Gergiev, conductor, at the Barbican Arts Centre, London on January 14th, at 8pm. On the following two days, Lips will be busy with a master class at the Royal Academy of Music in London, which will be dedicated first of all to the works of Sofia Gubaidulina, who may be present at this event. The BBC publicity says: “After many years writing for the accordion and its close relative, the bayan, Sofia Gubaidulina crafted a majestic concerto for the latter, entitled ‘Under the Sign of Scorpio’. Friedrich Lips gave the 40-minute work's premiere in 2003 and shares the scorpion's zodiac sign with the composer, hence the concerto's title if not its character”.

Like a Water Buffalo-CD available!

Twenty years have passed since Yuji Takahashi's "Like a Water Buffalo" for accordion solo was composed. One spring day in 2003 Japenese accordionist Mie Miki had a dream: Friedrich Lips (Russia), Elsbeth Moser (Switzerland), Matti Rantanen (Finland) and herself on one CD, playing "Like a Water Buffalo" by Yuji Takahashi and reciting the poem "Song for 'Water-buffalo' " by Wendy Poussard in their own mother tongues. Eighteen months passed after the original proposition was made. The unique CD was performed with Wendy Poussard reciting her poem "Song Mr 'Water-buffalo' ", with the Suigyu (Water Buffalo) Band performing Yuji Takahashi's original song, and with four soloists, playing the same wonderful music in their own distinct styles, making this CD epoc-making in the history of the accordion.
