Friedrich Lips

Friedrich Lips is maybe the most famous Russian bajanist (accordionist), known not only in the accordion world but also in classical and contemporary circles.

Since more than 40 years he has been touring the world and, thus, developing his position as internationally renowned artist on his instrument.

LIPS CD 027 FACHWERK / KAPOTE available!

The idea of “framework“ (dedicated to Geir Draugsvoll) comes from the architectural style of the same name. Traditional timber framing is the method of creating structures using heavy squared-off and carefully fitted and joined timbers with joints secured by large wooden pegs. These struts are visible on the outer sides of the house, thus giving it a distinctive look. Such house constructions are characteristic in Alpine regions: Switzerland, Austria, Alsace in France ... In this work, Sofia Gubaidulina, following the laws of this architectural style, quasi rotates the instrument from inside to out and shows maximum of possibilities based on the particular construction of the accordion: both a new understanding of the role of the standard bass manual and its connection to the melody bass manual, as well as a variety of tone-glissandi, including polyphonic ... This whole constructive framework, due to the ingenuity and imagination of the composer, develops into a colorful emotional image and has a strong effect on the listener. Giya Kancheli sometimes is called “Maestro of silence“. “Kapote“ means “once, ages ago“ in its translation from the Greek. An original minimalism and the finest sound painting literally dazzle the listener with their magical beauty. Imaginative contours, once (“Kapote“) solidified in crystal-clear beauty, slowly encase our ears. Our consciousness hears formerly heard melodies and tango rhythms, a tarantella, an allusion to the sound of the barrel organ, the Caucasian Harmonica ... ... Man lives in the future. Our essence is fixated on what we need to do tomorrow, in one month, one year ... In our age of aggressive information overload it sometimes seems that we have no time left to live. And it is given just to a few to feel free without any problems at a given moment. When we listen to this work of Kancheli, the words of Pope Benedict XVI come to our mind: “Music has three sources: love, sorrow and encounter with God“.

LIPS CD 026 NIGHT FLOWERS available!

Michael Bronner wrote several cycles of “Jewish songs” for various ensembles: for violin, tuba and chamber orchestra, for chorus and piano, for orchestra with folk instruments ... “Seven Jewish Songs” for accordion and orchestra include both new pieces as well as compositions of other cycles. Seven Jewish life pictures clearly show us different aspects of being, the local way of life in the “village” (any small village in Belarus and Ukraine, home to people of different nationalities): joy and sorrow, memories of the past…. Bronner gives an authentic and accurate description of the typical national coloring of provincial village life and the particular nature of the villagers, usually with his inimitable sense of humor. By the way, in this cycle the composer only uses his own themes. Three Chorale Preludes” were originally written for organ by Johannes Brahms. The arrangement for cello and accordion comes from V.Tonkha and F. Lips. The “Tatarian Dance” by Sofia Gubaidulina is a jocular birthday song for the composer and close friend Viktor Suslin. The small effective piece was written for an unusual ensemble: accordion and 2 double basses. What is also unusual is the use of traditional Tatar pentatonic in modern music. “Moment” by Alexander Cholminov is the last work of one of the greatest Russian composers of the twentieth century. It's just a little sketch, but very convincing: postlude, postscript, meditation on the threshold of eternity ... In continuation of her series on “flowers” Tatiana Sergeyeva wrote the charming miniature “Night flowers”. A certain aleatoric in the musical notes gives the piece a spicy touch. When listening we really feel the smell of night flowers, the aroma of night violets…

LIPS CD 025 LIPS CONCERTO available!

In his "Concerto" for Bayan and Symphony Orchestra (2009) A.N.Kholminov created an impressive fresco, where on the background of the symphonic orchestra the bayan was featured as a solo instrument in a very bright and pulsating way. The score is written so masterfully that the soloist is not drowned anywhere. In Kholminov's music, grown up in the best traditions of the Russian school of composers, the influence of his great countrymen can be felt: Mussorgsky and Borodin with their broad Russian hymns and their monumental sonority. The special dedication to the artist expressed in the title of E.Podgaits' "Lips Concerto" for Bayan and Symphony Orchestra (2001) is based on a series of concrete symbols. Thus, Bach's invention in F major begins with the sounds "fa - la", which corresponds to the initials of the artist. The digits of the telephone number of the artist (3152824) result in a melody, which the composer uses humorously in several passages. During the whole concerto, the magnificent beauty of the harmonic ellipse (this word also contains the surname of the artist) is charming the public and solidifies the characteristic episodes of the concert: foxtrot, tango (in three beats!), waltz (in four beats!). Obviously, the rhythm plays a very special artistic role in Podgaits' work. Thanks to his bright and optimistic view of the world, the composer confirms the life, the beauty and the joy of existence.

Lips workshop 2016

The next summer-course of Friedrich Lips in Austria will be held during Musikforum Viktring-Klagenfurt from July, 11 - 15 2016.

23rd Festival "Bayan and bayanists" in Moscow

With participation of the federal agency of culture, Russian Gnessin Academy of Music and the Friedrich Lips Fund the traditional XXI International Festival "Bayan and bayanists" took place in the concert hall of the Russian Gnessin Academy of Music in Moscow from December 14 to 18, 2011. The absolute highlight of the whole festival - not only because of the completely filled concert hall of the Gnessin Music Academy - was the final concert with "Klezmer reloaded" and "Klaus Paier trio" from Austria. For his merits and his contribution to the development of the accordion Klaus Paier was the first Austrian accordionist ever to be conferred the "SILVER DISC".

LIPS CD 024 UNDER THE SIGN OF SCORPIO available!

"Ex animo" - from the heart (lat.). The composition of Podgaits is one of the few examples of a bayan quintet - bayan with string quartet. The quintet was commissioned by Fine Arts Quartet (Milwaukee, USA). "Under the Sign of Scorpio" - one of the biggest frescos of the outstanding composer Sofia Gubaidulina. In each composition for bayan she opens up new specific possibilities of the instrument and finds new interesting solutions to realize her plans.

LIPS CD 023 COCKTAIL "RIO RITA" available!

E.Denisov's “The steamer is sailing past the harbour“ is a phantasy on topics of popular Soviet songs oft he 30s of the 20th century, written in tonal form, presenting subtle humour and refined compositional techniques. A.Piazzolla's concerto “Aconcagua“ is one of the few oeuvres of the great Argentinean in a long form. Such as the Aconcagua is one of the world's highest summits, Piazzolla's concerto has to be counted among the greatest achievements of this composer. T.Sergeyeva's bright and beautiful music, that is even spreading optimism, reminds you of a splendid bouquet whose flowers lure the listener with impressive colours. It was my wish to adapt the concert-burlesque by A. Shurbin for a Unisono of accordionists. One of P.Frosini's - the famous American accordionist of Italian origin - best known oeuvres reflects the style of North American musicians of the first half of it he 20th century extremely well. There are numerous arrangements and transcriptions of the world's most famous tango “La Cumparsita“ by G.M.Rodriguez. This CD presents that masterly oeuvre in the arrangement by A.Piazzolla, which is not very well known. E.Podgaits' Cocktail “Rio Rita“ is a quintet for violin, cello, accordeon, piano and percussion. It was written in 2008 and is dedicated to F.Lips for his jubilee as interpreter of the composer. Podgaits embarks on a musical journey of discovery in order to explore the connections of one of the most popular pieces of music of the 20th century - Rio Rita - to the music of classical composers and folk music.

5th International Competition of Bayanists and Accordionists in Moscow

The 5th International Competition of Bayanists and Accordionists and the 22nd International Festival “Bayan and bayanists” took place from December 12th to 19th in Russia's Gnessin Academy of Music with great success. Competitors from Russia, Belarus, France, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, China, Serbia and Poland took part in this event, which included three rounds of close competition with six finalists battling for first place. Efrem Podgaits’: "Viva Voce", Concerto №2 for bayan and chamber orchestra was selected as mandatory concert for the final round. For the very first time a category for variety music was introduced in the programme. 1st prize-winner of the category “Academic music” became Eldar Abduraimov (Russia), Tian Jianan (China) won the category of “Variety music”.

LIPS CD 022 VIVA VOCE available!

The Norwegian composer Trigve Madsen wrote а „Partita for 2 accordions" for Friedrich Lips und Jon Faukstad. With it he wanted - regarding the fact that the interpreters саmе from Russia аnd Norway - to depict in humourous elements how close the Russian composer D.Shostakovitch and E.Grieg, the Norwegian, аге both in style and themes. Yehuda Yannay wrote mоге than 120 oeuvres for various instruments, electronic music and music for films. „Вауаnnауаb”, раlindromic oeuvre, comes from the family nаmе of „Yаnnаy”аnd from the name of the „Вауаn”, the musical instrument. This piece of music is based оn fоuг chords which аге, gradually, taken араrt, аnd which eclipse each other. Roman Ledenyov’s „Round dance“ is the Зrd part of а сусlе whose title is „Russian Landscape in the Back". „Round dance“ is а circular, lугical dаnсе combined with childlike games. Roman Ledenyov and Efrem Podgaits, both excellent Russian composers, present their versions of the image of Virgin Магу: „Ave Maria“. In „Concerto N° 2“ Еfrem Рodgaits uses the strееt-sоng „Murka” from Оdеssа аnd, moreover, wе аlsо detect the motive of the song „Oh, Odessa!“ „Viva voce" (lively voice) is tо present – according to the composer's ideas – the sound as well аs the breath of the street.

LIPS CD 021 ECLIPSE available!

This CD is particularly interesting as it exclusively contains - except for the Sonata №1 by G. Bantshikov from 1977 – oeuvres for bayan written in 21st century. A.Cholminov is another great Russian composer of the 20th century. Apart from numerous operas, symphonies, oeuvres for choir and chamber music, he wrote the very simple but profound and heartbreakingly beautiful melody for the film “Predsedatyel” (“The Chairman”) – and that using only two notes. Cholminov uses this melody in his “Autumn melody”. The outstanding Russian composer R.Ledenyov, professor at the Moscovite Conservatory, worked on a cycle of oeuvres for bayan entitled “…on the background of the Russian landscape”. “Evening love ditties” is the 2nd oeuvre of this cycle. The sonata by E.Podgaits, one of the most important Russian composers of the middle generation, was written on Lips’suggestion. M.Bronner, the phenomenal composer of great symphonies, choir- and chamber music oeuvres, as well as various ones for bayan, has, following Lips’request, written a piece entitled “Eclipse”. In this oeuvre the soul and its confusion make up the central part.

LIPS CD 018 THE LAST SUPPER available!

In the course of the centuries the topic of crucifixion has attracted the interest of many outstanding artists, painters, poets and composers. Jesus Christ's famous words (1. Father, Forgive Them, For They Know Not What They Do. 2. Woman, Behind Thy Son. Son, Behold Thy Mother. 3. Verily, I Say Unto Thee: Today Thou Shalt Be With Me In Paradise. 4. My God, My God, Why Hast Thou Forsaken me? 5. I Thirst. 6. It Is Accomplished. 7. Father, Into Thy Hands I Commend My Spirit ) are the basis of S.Gubaidulina’s Partita "Seven Words", for violoncello, bayan and chamber orchestra. After visiting the monastery in the north of Russia, in the area of Vologda, V.Solotarjov wrote the oeuvre "Monastery of Ferapont, meditation about the Dionisy frescos", as the composer was highly impressed by these witty and novel frescos which were created by the great Russian painter Dionisy. For mankind, the secret of Judas' treachery has been a mystery for more than 2000 years. According to the only recently discovered gospel by Judas, the master himself asked Judas to sacrifice him and thus free Christ's soul from the human body. The "Passion of Judas" by M.Bronner, one of the most famous Russian composers, is based on this complicated riddle. The program of this CD is concluded with Bach's Hymn -Prelude "I call, Jesus Christ", BWV 639. There people turn towards God by meditation about all eternity.

Friedrich Lips in London

Friedrich Lips will perform Gubaidulina's concert ‘Under the sign of Scorpio’, with the BBC Symphony Orchestra - V.Gergiev, conductor, at the Barbican Arts Centre, London on January 14th, at 8pm. On the following two days, Lips will be busy with a master class at the Royal Academy of Music in London, which will be dedicated first of all to the works of Sofia Gubaidulina, who may be present at this event. The BBC publicity says: “After many years writing for the accordion and its close relative, the bayan, Sofia Gubaidulina crafted a majestic concerto for the latter, entitled ‘Under the Sign of Scorpio’. Friedrich Lips gave the 40-minute work's premiere in 2003 and shares the scorpion's zodiac sign with the composer, hence the concerto's title if not its character”.

Like a Water Buffalo-CD available!

Twenty years have passed since Yuji Takahashi's "Like a Water Buffalo" for accordion solo was composed. One spring day in 2003 Japenese accordionist Mie Miki had a dream: Friedrich Lips (Russia), Elsbeth Moser (Switzerland), Matti Rantanen (Finland) and herself on one CD, playing "Like a Water Buffalo" by Yuji Takahashi and reciting the poem "Song for 'Water-buffalo' " by Wendy Poussard in their own mother tongues. Eighteen months passed after the original proposition was made. The unique CD was performed with Wendy Poussard reciting her poem "Song Mr 'Water-buffalo' ", with the Suigyu (Water Buffalo) Band performing Yuji Takahashi's original song, and with four soloists, playing the same wonderful music in their own distinct styles, making this CD epoc-making in the history of the accordion.
